Feedback Forward Basics: Fast and Detailed Feedback

What can I do with Feedback Forward?

There are two kinds of feedback you can give in Feedback Forward: Fast Feedback and Detailed Feedback. Each serves a different purpose and helps you establish effective feedback routines in different ways.

Fast Feedback
With Fast Feedback, you can give quick feedback to an entire class of students on a single skill, behavior, or other criteria, like engagement, collaboration, or preparation. You can give feedback once per class or multiple times during one class period.

Fast Feedback allows you to create custom criteria that are relevant to your students and their goals. You can also import state and national standard sets to use as criteria for giving feedback on academic skill mastery. While you can give feedback on multiple criteria over time, what matters most is consistency. In order to view meaningful trends on the Data Insights tab, you need to give feedback at least five to ten times on the same criterion.

For example, you can use Fast Feedback to give feedback on….

• student engagement,
• preparation for class,
• focus or initiative during a warm-up,
• participation during collaborative activities or class discussions,
• growth of a specific academic skill or standard, such as…
  • hypothesis writing: quality of testable hypothesis over time
  • argumentation: using evidence to support a claim
  • academic research: choosing and referencing reliable sources
  • lab roles and responsibilities: tracking whether students adhere to assigned role or responsibilities

In Fast Feedback Insights, you have the option to filter to a specific student and set a goal, which will create a goal line on the Student Trends chart. In doing so, you can create a progress monitoring chart that compares a student’s average with the class average and goal line. You can also create groups of students within a class, so that you can give Fast Feedback to a select number of students instead of the entire class. This allows you to give targeted or differentiated Fast Feedback.

Detailed Feedback
Detailed Feedback allows you to give thorough feedback on multiple criteria for an assignment to one student at a time. After you give feedback, you can share it with students and indicate whether or not students should revise and resubmit for new feedback. Detailed Feedback allows you to  auto-generate a grade based on your feedback, adjust that grade, and either hide or display the grade for students. This kind of feedback is well-suited for projects, presentations, essays, or other kinds of assessments where students would benefit from in-depth feedback and/or a chance to revise and receive multiple rounds of feedback for growth.

Just as with Fast Feedback, Detailed Feedback allows you to create custom criteria for an assignment and choose the scale labels that best suits the type of feedback. However, with Detailed Feedback you can also (optionally) add your own descriptors or indicator text for each score level. You can also import preloaded state and national standard sets into your account and use those as ready-made criteria for assignment feedback.
